Lions defender Darcy Gardiner will undergo shoulder surgery on Wednesday and faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

The 25-year-old dislocated his right shoulder in the Lions’ 73 point victory over the Suns on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

It is the same shoulder he has dislocated twice before and Lions high performance manager Damien Austin said the decision was made to strengthen the joint with surgery.

“He had a surgical review today and will have a shoulder operation tomorrow,’’ he said.

“It will take between 12 and 14 weeks to recover so we hope he may be able to pay some football at the end of the season.’’

Veteran defender Ryan Lester also suffered a hamstring injury in his 150th AFL game and faces up to two weeks on the sidelines.

It was a tough weekend for the Lions who also lost Harry Sharp and Ely Smith to ankle injuries from the VFL victory over the Suns on Thursday night.

Both have undergone surgery this week and face extended periods in rehabilitation.

“Ely has reinjured a syndesmosis and has done a bit more damage to it, so he’ll be out for 6 to 8 weeks,’’ he said.

“Harry went in an ambulance because there was a chance he had broken his ankle, the good news is he hadn’t but he’s had some ligament damage and that will take about three months to repair.’’
