Lyons had already triggered a clause in his contract to play-on with the Lions in 2022 but has now put pen to paper on a two-year extension that ties him to the Club until the end of 2024.

The 28-year-old is in career best form having finished second to Brownlow medalist Lachie Neale in the 2020 Merrett-Murray medal voting before finding another gear in a superb 2021 campaign to date.

He has been among the best players each week as the Lions recovered from a 0-2 start to push themselves into third spot on the AFL ladder and has cemented his status as one of the premier clearance and contested possession players in the competition.

The former Crow and Suns midfielder credits the move to Brisbane for allowing him to reach his full potential as an AFL player.

“Joining the Lions has been terrific for me,’’ he said.

“They are a great bunch of players and a really supportive coaching staff who have created a culture that makes it an absolute pleasure to come to work each day.

“There’s exciting times ahead for this group and I’m thrilled to have committed to the Lions for the next three years.

“I’ve been pretty happy with my form over the past couple of years and I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard on my game and giving the best I can each week for this Club.’’

Lions GM of Football Danny Daly said Lyons had quickly established himself as a key player and strong leader for the Club since crossing from the Gold Coast at the end of 2018.

“Jarryd is a very important figure at our Club,’’ he said.

“From the moment he arrived at the Club he showed great leadership and it was no surprise he was voted into the leadership group after his first season.

“He has a really strong footy IQ which allows him to make great contributions in our discussions about footy and also really helps with the development of our younger players.

“And his on-field stuff speaks for itself, his consistency has been incredible; and you know that every week he’ll front up and get the job done. ‘’
