The booming left foot of Daniel Rich has seen the Brisbane Lions veteran crowned the No.1 go-forward player in the AFL this season.

At the end of his 13th and arguably best home-and-away season Rich has topped the ‘metres gained’ statistic for 2021 with 13,939m. Or an average of 633.6m per game.

The 31-year-old headed Gold Coast’s Jack Lukosius (13,778m), Adelaide’s Paul Seedsman (13,335m) and North Melbourne’s (13,015m).

Skipper Dayne Zorko ranked 10th in the League overall with 10,967m despite missing one game. He averaged 522.2m.

Rich’s huge drive off half back, so prominent in Saturday’s nail-biter against West Coast at the Gabba, has him in contention for his first All-Australian selection this year.

Already his 575 possessions for 2021 is a personal best, topping his 540 possessions in a 2019 season that included two finals and seeing him rank second in total possessions for the Lions this year behind Jarryd Lyons (620), with Hugh McCluggage (548) and Zorko (11) also topping 500.

If Rich can top 600 possessions he will be just the seventh Brisbane player to do so in a season. Simon Black and Nigel Lappin did so twice, while Michael Voss, Adrian Fletcher, Luke Power, Lachie Neale and now Lyons have posted one 600+ season.

Neale’s 742-possession season of 2019 is the club record.

Rich’s push towards 600 will continue in the qualifying final against Melbourne in Adelaide on Saturday night after Rich surpassed another significant milestone last Saturday – his 100th AFL win.

Rich was the 17th player to reach triple figure wins in Brisbane colors. It is a list headed by Simon Black (174), Michael Voss (167) and Nigel Lappin (162), with Marcus Ashcroft (153), Luke Power (152) and Jason Akermanis (151) at 150-plus.

Others with 100+ wins are Shaun Hart (147), Jonathan Brown (145), Justin Leppitsch (135), Chris Scott (126), Daniel Bradshaw (125), Craig McRae (125), Tim Notting (121), Chris Johnson (120) and Alastair Lynch (117).
