The Brisbane Lions are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace where all employees have equal opportunities to thrive. As part of our commitment to transparency, we report our gender pay gap data in line with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) requirements.

Our employees are diverse and include our professional and semi-professional athletes, football department, management, administrative staff, match day staff and hospitality staff. This wide-ranging set of employees includes part time, contract and casual employees.

For context, the wage and earnings of an AFL player are higher on average than an AFLW player, due to the length of season, commercial contracts and broadcast rights. The men’s competition has been underway for 150 years and historically there has been a gender disparity across the industry. This is changing as AFLW continues to grow as a competition, noting AFLW wages have increased 80% since the competition’s formation.

This gap is influenced by factors such as the distribution of men and women in senior leadership, coaching and high-performance roles, and historically male-dominated sectors within the sporting industry.

Understanding the Gender Pay Gap
The gender pay gap does not mean women and men are paid differently for the same job. Instead, it reflects structural workforce patterns, including:

  • The underrepresentation of women in senior, coaching and higher-paid roles.
  • Differences in job types, with some roles attracting higher market rates. Noting our figures include professional athletes to casual hospitality staff.

Trends and Progress
Over the past four years, our gender pay gap has varied, reflecting changes in workforce composition, remuneration structures, and industry factors.

Notably, our median total remuneration gap increased from 23.2% in 2022-23 to 27.1% in 2023-24, indicating a need for continued focus on equitable pay and career progression pathways.
