Newly appointed Brisbane Lions Co-Captain Josh Dunkley has signed a two-year contract extension to remain with the Club until at least the end of 2030.
Dunkley, a two-time premiership player with the Lions, was already contracted for the next three seasons but moved quickly to lock in his long-term future.
The new deal caps of a big month for the 29-year-old who was voted in as Co-Captain alongside Harris Andrews and Hugh McCluggage last week.
With a new leadership role and a new contract finalised the star midfielder said he is looking forward to the future on and off the field.
“It’s great to extend a couple more years as I couldn’t see myself being anywhere else and I’m excited to be a Lion for life,” Dunkley said
“I am really excited about the group moving forward and what we can achieve together.
“And for my future life I see myself being in Queensland and I don’t want to be anywhere else either, because (my partner) Tippah and I love it here.”
Dunkley, the Club’s reigning Merrett-Murray Medallist, has played in three consecutive Grand Finals as a Lion – including back-to-back flags.
Having been a key part of that success since arriving in 2023, the selfless midfielder spoke about what he wants to achieve in the next five years and beyond.
“I want to keep being a leader of the club and give back as much as I possibly can and help our young guys be the best version of themselves,” Dunkley said.
“I also want to help retain players as well and keep this group together, because if we can continue to maintain the rage and learn from our experiences there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be continuing to challenge for finals.
“We would love to win it all every year, but we know there so much work to be done before we get to that point and how hard it is to do.”
Brisbane Lions General Manager Football Danny Daly said the Club was delighted to have Dunkley extend his contract.
“We could not be happier to have Josh extending his future with us because he is such an invaluable member of our Club both on and off the field,” Daly said
“Everyone you talk to holds Josh in the highest regard because he leads the way as a great player and more importantly as a great human being.
“We love having Josh, his partner Tippah, his parents Andrew and Lisa, his sister Lara and brother Kyle at our Club and are glad they are staying for years to come.”
