The Club’s first round draft selection, Sam Mayes, has been allocated the famous Number 32 guernsey - most notably worn by 2001 Norm Smith Medallist Shaun Hart.
Hart’s 273 senior AFL matches with the Bears/Lions remains a combined Club record for most games played in the Number 32.
Hart is one of five players to have worn the Number 32 in 100 or more games for the Club - along with Clen Denning (159 matches with Fitzroy), Russell Crow (158 games with Fitzroy), Jason Baldwin (125 games with Fitzroy), and Cheynee Stiller (100 games with the Lions).
Marco Paparone will also have big shoes to fill after being handed down the Number 22 guernsey, which became vacant following Ben Hudson’s departure.
Dual Premiership defender and 1998 Club Champion Chris Scott is clearly the most accomplished player to have donned the Number 22 throughout the Club’s combined 116-year VFL/AFL history.
Michael Close, meanwhile, will wear the Number 33 throughout his AFL career with the Lions - the same number as triple Premiership star Darryl White.
The Number 33 has strong origins at the Club, with former Fitzroy greats such as Alan ‘Butch’ Gale and Brett Stephens also etched on its locker door.
Hopefully Mayes, Paparon, and Close can now create their own history in their new jumper numbers.
