It hasn’t taken long for Brisbane Lions recruit Trent West to make an impression on new ruck partner Matthew Leuenberger.

Leuenberger has been going head-to-head at training with West during the team’s high altitude camp in Flagstaff, and has already been on the receiving end of some ‘friendly fire’ from the former Geelong premiership ruckman.

“The nick above my eye came courtesy of Westy during the first session,” Leuenberger told lions.com.au.

“We were competing and I just copped a stray elbow. So I ducked off to the medical centre and got a bit of glue in the eyebrow.”

In only a short time, Leuenberger says he has developed a good relationship with West and is looking forward to forming a formidable ruck combination with the fellow big man.

“I’ve spent heaps of time with him on this camp,” Leuenberger said.

“He’s a great fella and seems to be enjoying his time here so far. I’ve got no doubt he’ll be a huge asset for us.

“(Being away in Arizona) is a good way to break the ice and get to know him, and also guys like Jackson Paine and Luke McGuane.”
