GREATER Western Sydney head north full of confidence after its historic win over Gold Coast last week. Conversely, the Lions are in a slump, being thumped by Geelong, Essendon and Collingwood in the past three weeks. Michael Voss' men risk another winter of misery unless they fix things quickly, starting with a plucky Giants outfit that have shown they will not take a backward step.
THE FOUR POINTS
BRISBANE LIONS
1. After a 2011 season built on being competitive, the Lions have been smashed at the contest in the past two weeks. Essendon and Collingwood have slaughtered them at stoppages and in contested possessions, and a similar effort against the Giants will end in the same result.
2. Can Jonathan Brown get enough supply to kick goals? The Lions captain has kicked just eight goals in five games this season, and as much as teams like a spread of goalkickers, the Lions need Brown to fire. But with an average of just 45 inside 50s per match, the big man is getting few opportunities.
3. An ongoing question for Voss is where to play Daniel Merrett. With Matt Maguire having a strong season at fullback, Merrett has been preferred forward. Against Collingwood he struggled to get involved, finishing with six disposals, and getting the best out of the rock-solid Merrett is a key to the Lions succeeding.
4. The Lions are staring down the barrel of some low crowds in coming weeks and need to give the Brisbane punters a reason to come and support. They host low-drawing GWS, West Coast and Melbourne - all on Sunday afternoons - in the next six weeks and need to produce some exciting, winning football to lure fans back to the Gabba.
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
1. How will the young Giants deal with their first AFL victory? The enthusiasm and excitement that oozed from the young list following the upset win over the Suns was terrific. But they will need to keep their minds on the job and not get carried away when they fly north.
2. GWS has impressed with its work at the clearances for a first-year club, currently sitting eight in the AFL with 39 per game thus far. Next on the list? The Lions. Whoever can win that area of the ground will be on their way to victory.
3. Will coach Kevin Sheedy keep faith with his young side? The list has been heavily rotated so far in an effort to keep the inexperienced bodies fresh, but it will be hard to drop too many from the history-making side that took on and beat the Gold Coast.
4. How will the AFL's frequent flyers find their first trip north of Sydney? The Giants have already played in Sydney, Launceston, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne in their short history. A trip to the Sunshine State, and some potential heat and humidity, will offer some fresh challenges.
