Lions listening for Lucy
The Brisbane Lions' Sunshine Coast Supporter Group are helping raise funds for a local 'lionheart' in need of some life-changing surgery.
Two year-old Lucy was born with Goldenhar Syndrome, which caused a variety of cranio facial abnormalities and significant deafness.
Her mother Michelle is determined to provide her daughter with the best possible hearing - so has embarked on a plan to travel from Caloundra to the United States for specialist ear surgery which will reconstruct Lucy's ear canals.
The family needs to raise a total of $60,000 and are being supported by the Lions' own Sunshine Coast Supporter Group (SCSG).
The SCSG have already donated $500 towards the cause and, with assistance from the Club, have also supplied little fan Lucy with a wide range of Lions merchandise.
SCSG President Peter Cheeseman said his band of loyal Lions fans on the Sunshine Coast regularly find ways to support people in the local community.
"One of our members is close with Lucy and her mum Michelle, and is actually on the committee which is helping raise $60,000 for her operation," Cheeseman said.
"We obviously like to support our members, and a worthwhile charity each year, so this seemed an obvious choice."
He said the SCSG would continue working towards assisting the 'Listening for Lucy' program in the coming weeks.
"We presented them with a cheque for $500 recently and kitted Lucy out in Lions gear with help from the Club itself," he said.
"The main fundraising event is on Saturday 17 March, so some of the ladies in our Support Group are keen to hold a morning tea to raise some more funds."
"$60,000 is a lot of money to raise, but I believe they're already halfway there which is fantastic."
The SCSG will get to watch the Lions play live for the first time on their home turf this afternoon when the team hosts Carlton at Maroochdore.
