One of Michael Voss’ key philosophies this pre-season has been finding that extra competitive advantage and continually lifting standards and expectations.

And while much of the hard work is being done by the players on the training track, the Brisbane Lions’ Senior Coach is practising what he preaches.

Voss has recently undertaken a coaching study tour around the globe which he hopes will open his eyes to some of world’s best sporting practices.

His journey started with some of his players at North Arizona University in Flagstaff, and has since included visits to Florida State University, Notre Dame University, FC Twente (Holland), Tottenham (Great Britain), and AC Milan (Italy).

Voss believes the trip has certainly helped uncover some first-class processes that can be implemented at the Lions next season.

"I've been gallivanting all over the place, but the main aim was to look at what the elite are doing. To look at world's best practice," Voss told The Courier Mail on Wednesday.

"I've been coaching in the AFL system for four years and I thought it was time to have a look at how others do it and see what I could bring back to help both me and the football club as a whole.”

"We demand that our players look to constantly learn and improve. Our focus this pre-season is being really specific with them about how they can go about that.”

"I need to do learn and improve myself. I've seen a million things over the past few weeks that will help our footy club prosper.”

"What I have learned is that there are a lot of things that we are already doing very well but there are also areas where we are a long way off."

Voss has been keeping fans updated on his progress via Twitter (@voss03).
