Former Brisbane Lions defender Josh Drummond will remain involved in the AFL next year after he was appointed as North Melbourne's development coach on Thursday.

Drummond, who played 94 matches in nine seasons with the Lions, made no secret of his desire to move into the coaching ranks after announcing his retirement as a player in September.

"I'm keen to get involved in coaching and development. It's something I'm really keen on," Drummond said.

The 29 year-old has already received a glowing endorsement from Lions Senior Coach Michael Voss, who believes Drummond has all the necessary tools to make a successful AFL coach.

“He’s got a footy brain - his ability to interpret and analyse a situation is excellent,” Voss said.

“I would have thought that if he’s got aspirations to coach or be involved somehow, he’s certainly got the nous to do so.”

Now the lethal left-footer finds himself in the Kangaroos' camp, with a focus on working with their 1-4 year players.

“It’s really exciting to be down here and get stuck into it. I know Brad (Scott) well from playing and I’ve also met Brady (Rawlings) through his brother Jade who coached us up at Brisbane,” Drummond told kangaroos.com.au.

The Brisbane Lions congratulate Drummond on his well-deserved appointment and wish him all the best for a long and successful future in the coaching caper.
