Brandon Starcevich is set to claim a slice of Brisbane Football Club history on Thursday night, playing his 37th game in the #37 guernsey as the Lions host Geelong at the Gabba.

And barring injury in Round 19, the emerging backline star will go on to hold the record for most games played in #37 across the entire Brisbane/Fitzroy family with his 42nd game.

In something of a statistical out-rider, Starcevich shares the Brisbane record of 36 games in #37 with 1988 Bears Club Champion Mark Withers, and is closing on Collingwood turned Fitzroy player Keith Bromage, who played 41 games for the ‘old’ Lions from 1958-61.

Starcevich is one of four current Lions players to top the club games list in their chosen number. The others are Dan McStay (#25), Harris Andrews (#31) and Oscar McInerney (#46).

McStay and McInerney also hold the combined club record, while 122-gamer Andrews is chasing the #31 record of 157 games held by 1944 premiership player Bert Clay.

Oddly, McInerney will be opposed on Thursday night to the player who holds the all-time AFL record of games in #46 at 191 – Geelong’s Mark Blicavs.

Only one Brisbane player holds the AFL games record in his number - #20 Simon Black.

Paul Roos, who played 289 games for Fitzroy in #1 before adding 87 games in the same number for Sydney, holds the all-time AFL record in #1 at 356 gamers.

And in a little-known statistical oddity, ex-Fitzroy star Leon Harris, now a member of the club’s recruiting staff, holds the AFL record for games in #56. He played 20 games in his first season in 1979 in #56 before 166 games in #38.

And who holds the Brisbane games record in #56? It’s another golden trivia question … Michael Voss, club record holder in #3 at 283 games, played his first six games in #56 for the Bears in 1992 as a 17-year-old.

Curiously, Alastair Lynch played most games in #11 for Fitzroy (120) and Brisbane (186).

Former Fitzroy favorite Gary Pert, now CEO at Melbourne, holds the Fitzroy games record in two different numbers. He played his first 10 games in 1982 in #10 to share that record with John Lewis, and 153 games in #3 before defecting to Collingwood.

Mal Michael, a key defensive pillar in the Lions’ 2001-02-03 premiership sides in guernsey #15, holds the AFL record for games in #48, which he wore 61 at Collingwood before heading ‘home’ to Brisbane.

Michael McLean, Brisbane club champion in 1991 and 1993 in #19, holds the AFL record for games in #51. He wore it 95 times for the Bulldogs from 1983-89.

Former Bears coach Robert Walls holds the record of 218 games in #42 during his Carlton days, and Luke Hodge, now a part-time member of the Lions coaching staff, holds the #15 record of 305 games at Hawthorn.
