Before committing to AFL, Jack Payne was a promising discus thrower, representing Australia at the Oceanic Games and also dabbled in rugby union. At 13-years-old he was talent scouted on the Sunshine Coast and invited to join the Hyundai Help for Kids Lions Academy program and the rest is history. He played in the 2017 NEAFL Premiership team as an Academy player before being drafted later that year. Unfortunately his first two seasons, 2018 and 2019, were disrupted by injury, with the key defender aiming to find more consistency in his body and time on field in 2020.
