The Brisbane Lions VFL side followed their AFL teammates footsteps, breezing past North Melbourne by 104-points at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex on Saturday.

With 13 individual goalkickers, there were contributors across the board. Impressively, the Lions had piled on 15 majors before half-time while only giving up three goals in the process.

First-year player Kai Lohmann led the attack, kicking 5.1 to be the leading scorer on the day. The 18-year-old caught plenty of eyes with his mercurial ability in the air and on the ground as he threw himself at contest after contest.

Tom Berry was arguably the best on ground for the Lions, racking up 30 disposals, 2 goals while taking 7 marks and laying 5 tackles. The 21-year-old was tough in the contest and showcased his physicality alongside Rhys Mathieson as they overworked Norths midfield.

Mathieson again highlighted his class, collecting 34 touches and kicking 3 goals as he continues to knock down the door of Chris Fagan’s best 22.

On the win, VFL Head Coach Mitch Hahn said their success came from pressure.

“It was a great response from the team after last week,” he said.

“The focus was really on bringing the heat, creating pressure and playing for one another. Our pressure allowed us to create 25 forward half turnovers for 10 scoring shots. We also had 13 goal kickers which shows how even the performance was.

“We wanted to play for each other and celebrate the little things like getting around a teammate after a big contest, picking your mate up off the deck. The players should take a lot of confidence from this.”

The VFL side will now play in a curtain raiser against Geelong on Friday afternoon, a challenge Hahn says his side is ready for.

“Knowing we’re playing Geelong at GMHBA, it’s a big challenge, it’s going to be very tough, they beat us by about 100 points at Brendale last year, but the boys should take a lot of confidence out of the weekend.”
