Cam Rayner has posted his 100th Lions win on a weekend in which the club celebrated two other monumental milestones which had largely gone unheralded.

Among 356 Brisbane players all-time, Rayner is the 29th to enjoy 100 wins, the fourth-youngest and the ninth-quickest.

And, in a statistic which underlines the significance of such a milestone, and the quality of the current side, Rayner, one of 11 current players in the Brisbane 100-Win Club, was younger than every Fitzroy player to 100 wins and quicker than all but one.

Yet, historically, Rayner’s 100th win in Friday night’s Round 19 win over the Western Bulldogs’ at the Gabba was secondary as the club farewelled CEO Greg Swann and celebrated the 250th game of football chief Danny Daly.

Likewise, Harris Andrews’ 3000th Brisbane possession on Friday night. He was the 20th Brisbane player to this mark and just the second key defender after Ryan Lester.

Swann, who stepped into the new role as AFL Executive General Manager, Football Performance at headquarters in Melbourne today, was invited to join the Brisbane players for the ceremonial post-game song and given a ‘Gatorade Shower’.

He was at the Brisbane helm through 257 AFL games after his appointment on 24 July 2014.

He was also Lions CEO through 93 AFLW games since the League’s inception in 2017 which, although he did not attend every game live, meant he was in charge for a combined total of 350 AFL/ AFLW games during his time in Brisbane.

Daly, too, joined the song on Friday night in celebration of his 250th Lions game, which in fact was the Round 18 game against Carlton at Marvel Stadium.

Now the Lions General Manager – Football, Daly joined the club as an assistant-coach in 2015. He did two years under Justin Leppitsch before four years as the right-hand man to senior coach Chris Fagan as head of strategy, and took over as football boss in 2021 following the departure of David Noble.

Swann and Daly are two of only three senior off-field officials to hit 250 AFL games with the club.

The third was ex-Brisbane and Sydney CEO and now AFL Commissioner Andrew Ireland, who was in charge of the Bears/Lions from 1990 at Carrara until the first premiership in 2001 – 277 AFL games.

Triple premiership coach Leigh Matthews had 237 games with the club from 1999-2008, while Noel Gordon was Brisbane chairman through 201 games from 1990-1998.

Rayner’s 100th Brisbane win was a continuation of a combined Brisbane/Fitzroy history in which only 13 of 1157 Fitzroy players from 1897-1996 hit this mark. And only Ern Jenkins, a member of the very first Fitzroy side in 1897, was quicker to 100 wins.

Described on australianfootball.com as “one of the finest defenders cum followers in Victoria” Jenkins played 182 games for Fitzroy from 1897-1910.

He was a member of the 1899-1904-05 premiership sides and the losing grand final sides of 1900-03-06, and was captain in 1906-07 before coaching Richmond in 1913, and later officiating in 133 VFL matches as a goal umpire, including 16 finals and five grand finals, before his death aged 48 in 1927.

Jenkins was the first Fitzroy player to 100 wins, reaching this mark in his 143rd game aged 26 years 255 days. Rayner was 158 games and aged 25 years 270 days.

In Brisbane history, games record-holder Simon Black sits at the top of both lists. Like Jenkins, he was 143 games to 100 wins, and at 25 years 112 days he was one year and 143 days younger.

Almost appropriately, Black’s 100th win came in a 141-point win over Adelaide in 2004 which is the club’s biggest win post-merger, and the second-biggest in Brisbane history behind only the Bears’ 162-point hammering of Sydney at the Gabba in 1993.

The 2002 Brownlow Medallist made a habit of celebrating major milestones in big games  – the 2001 grand final win was his 50th win, he played his 100th game in the 2002 grand final win, and had a career-high 39 possessions to win the Norm Smith Medal in the 2003 grand final win.

Luke Power, the second-youngest Brisbane player to 100 wins, sits ahead of Bailey and Rayner, with Michael Voss, Nigel Lappin, Hugh McCluggage, Chris Scott, Jonathan Brown and Jarrod Berry completing the top 10 youngest.

Lachie Neale was 145 Brisbane games to 100 wins to rank second-quickest from Bailey, Power, Brown, Oscar McInerney, Charlie Cameron, Chris Johnson, Rayner and Craig McRae in the top 10.
