Fankhauser Oval provided the perfect deck for a goal-filled afternoon, with the Lions having 11 goal kickers.

McLachlan and Curtin were both dominant in the forward line, booting three goals apiece while Brisbane Lions Youi Academy player Connor Freiberg kicked two majors on debut, in a match that was largely one way traffic.

Cody Curtin opened the game with a major in the opening two minutes, before Southport responded through Taine Dawson. Curtin added another before Lincoln McCarthy, Zane Zakostelsky and VFL debutant Connor Freiberg all kicked one goal each, to give the Lions a strong 29-point lead at the first break.

Ben Murphy opened the second term with a major, before Kyle Dunkley booted two as the Lions responded to a goal from Southport to close out the quarter.

The Lions asserted their dominance in the third quarter, with majors from Will McLachlan, Luke Beecken, Murphy and Freiberg helping Brisbane take a commanding 78-point lead into the final break.

The Lions were again phenomenal in the final quarter with majors from Ethan Duke, Premiership player Bruce Reville and Sam Tilley, while a string of behinds helped Brisbane run away with a 98-point victory.

Sam Marshall had 27 disposals for the match with Sam Tilley and Jimmy Tunstill collecting 22 apiece. Zakostelsky was promising in the ruck with 22 hitouts which Reville collected 19 disposals, six marks and kicked a major in the final quarter.

The Lions defeated Southport 18.23 (131) – 4.9 (33).
