Eric Hipwood has put the heat on Brisbane's forward line to step up its output or risk being made to look silly by Richmond in Saturday night's qualifying final at the Gabba.

The Tigers won the round 23 clash at the MCG with a blistering first quarter built from back-half counter-attack that delivered the ball on a platter for Jack Riewoldt.

Hipwood, who has extended his contract until the end of 2023, said his fellow forwards had a two-pronged job to do.

He said not only did they have to limit Richmond's defensive-half run, but also help Virgin Australia AFL All Australian Charlie Cameron, who was kept to six touches and two goals by Dylan Grimes.

"We probably didn't help Charlie enough to be honest," Hipwood said.

"The beauty of our forward line is if you shut down one player, another player's going to pop up.

"Dylan Grimes is a quality defender and if we don't help Charlie enough he might do another number on him.

"We have to do those little things like blocks – we probably didn't help him out enough."

The Tigers' last-start 27-point win was built on supreme performances from Grimes, Nick Vlastuin (19 disposals and nine marks) and Bachar Houli (30 disposals), who routinely rolled off their Lions' opponents to intercept and get the ball moving the other way.

"We let them go through the middle a little too much and they hit up Jack Riewoldt so well," Hipwood said.

"We've got to be able to shut that down and our pressure has got to be extremely high.

"Their back-half transition was unbelievable … we've got to be on from the start to make sure we nullify that."
