Lions.com.au takes an in-depth look at the statistics from Sunday’s defeat against North Melbourne.
Disposals
Tom Rockliff battled manfully during the Kangaroos’ onslaught, finishing with a team-high 34 disposals.
Rockliff now leads the Club in terms of total possessions after four matches – overtaking teammate Pearce Hanley who was held to 17 touches.
Jed Adcock had a season-high 29 disposals from defence (almost half of which were rebound 50s), while Sam Docherty racked up 20 possessions in a promising display on debut.
Disposal Efficiency
There wasn’t a lot of clean ball movement from the Lions at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, although second-gamer Sam Mayes bucked the trend by finding a target with 17 of his 18 disposals (at an efficiency of 94.4%).
Marks
Jonathan Brown had a difficult day against North Melbourne, but still finished with a team-high eight marks – two of which were contested.
Brown didn’t receive great service from his midfield and was often competing in the air against two or three opponents at a time.
Fresh from taking 15 marks in the NEAFL last week, debutant Marco Paparone was one of the few players to find space at Etihad Stadium and finished with seven marks.
Tackles
After laying just six tackles in the opening quarter, the Lions finished with a total of 50 – with Jed Adcock leading the way with six.
Dayne Zorko and the team’s leading tackler for 2013 Jack Redden were next best with five each.
Hitouts
Matthew Leuenberger might have conceded the hitout tally to opposing ruckman Todd Goldstein 21-36, but the Lions big man arguably proved more valuable around the ground.
Leuenberger also racked up 19 disposals and six marks, compared to Goldstein’s 11 disposals and two marks.
Goals
Marco Paparone booted a team-high three goals after being activated as the substitute after quarter time.
Paparone could have almost finished with four – however a set shot on goal was reversed after one of teammates gave away a free kick off the ball.
Jonathan Brown, who was held goalless on Sunday, still leads the Lions with six goals from four games, while Josh Green has moved into outright second with five.
Dream Team
The Lions’ top five AFL Dream Team scorers were as follows:
118 – Jed Adcock
117 – Tom Rockliff
97 – Jack Redden
88 – Dayne Zorko
86 – Matthew Leuenberger
