The Brisbane Lions will spend the bye week with the satisfying knowledge that they already have posted the best ‘away’ record in club history … with four ‘away’ games still to play.
Friday night’s superb 41-point win over Geelong in Geelong gives them a 6-1-1 record from eight ‘away’ games.
Six wins equals the club best in a home-and-away season and identifies a travel record over the past six and a half years for which coach Chris Fagan has not received due recognition.
In the club’s first 32 years Brisbane had six “away” wins in the home-and-away season just once – under Leigh Matthews in 1999.
But since 2019 under Fagan they’ve hit this mark four times in 2019-21-22 and now 2025.
And they are still to play Carlton at Marvel Stadium (Round 18), Gold Coast at Carrara (Round 20), Collingwood at the MCG (Round 22) and Fremantle in Perth (Round 23) this year.
The 2024 premiers are only one win short of the club record for the most away wins in a season including finals, which was set last year when they won three consecutive ‘away’ finals to finish at 9-1-5 and claim the flag.
Their previous best was eight away wins (including one final) in 1999.
Friday night’s emphatic win spotlighted Logan Morris for the second week in a row after he kicked his second bag of five goals in a row, including his 50th career goal.
Morris was the 63rd player to kick 50 goals for Brisbane, and having taken 33 games to do so, he was the eighth-fastest overall and the second-fastest among players who debuted with the club.
He was one game behind Daniel Bradshaw, who was 32 games to 50 goals, three ahead of Craig McRae and Eric Hipwood, and 19 games ahead of Jonathan Brown.
Morris was the second-youngest to 50 goals at 20 years 41 days behind only Bradshaw (19/253).
Now with 30 goals for the season, he’s up to equal fifth on the Coleman Medal leaderboard behind Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron (48), GWS’ Jesse Hogan (40), Collingwood’s Jamie Elliott (35) and Port Adelaide’s Mitch Georgiades (33), and level with St.Kilda’s Jack Higgins.
Cam Rayner’s three goals against Geelong took his career tally to 152 and into the top 20 for the club all-time. He is the 21st Brisbane player to 150 goals.
Significantly, too, the Lions’ first win at Kardinia Park since 2003, which ended a 13-game losing streak at the ‘Cattery’, was the last of the ‘to do’ assignments coach Fagan set his playing group when he took charge of the club in 2017.
“At the start of this year we had three left – Richmond at the MCG, Hawthorn at the MCG and Geelong in Geelong, and we’ve got them all,” Fagan said.
The club hadn’t beaten Richmond at the MCG since 2009, Hawthorn at the same venue since 2004, or Geelong in Geelong since 2003.
“It’s been good … a lot of little things which we’ve ticked off along the way.”
The win, which was Dayne Zorko’s first in Geelong on his seventh visit, saw youngster Will McLachlan stretch his career record to 5-0 and within striking distance of the club’s best.
He’s behind only 2004 grand final player Dylan McLaren, who won his first nine games from 2001-03, Marcus Adams, who went 7-0 after joining the club from the Western Bulldogs, and Kai Lohmann, who began 6-0.
Shane Morrison had five wins and a draw to start his career, while seven others began 5-0 – Levi Ashcroft, Zac Bailey, Keidean Coleman, Jamie Charman, Matthew Leuenberger, Jimmy Madden and Ash McGrath.
